Totality Quilt Pattern featuring Quantum by Giucy Giuce .

By bethbastian | February 15, 2019 |

When Giucy Giuce came out with is Quantum fabric line, I went all fangirl and knew I would own some very soon! I went to the last day of Roads to California Quilt show, and I finally found what I was looking for. The only downside was I was not able to get as much as I wanted. Then the search for the perfect pattern began. I found the perfect pattern Totality by Satterwhite Quilts. This pattern is all about the half square triangle, I love a good half square triangle quilt. Last Saturday I told myself I could not have happy hour until I was done squaring up these babies. So really this process did not take that long…but I did have very good motivation 🙂 I love it, this is one of the rare quilts that I make for me. I have this hanging on my wall in…

6 Hour Baby Quilt Pattern

By bethbastian | January 31, 2019 |

Remix a new quilt pattern by JDsCustomQuilts I was so excited when Jill sent me their new pattern to test. Once I read the directions I thought I would time myself to see how fast I could complete the baby quilt with this pattern. The pattern itself comes in three different sizes but fell in love with the baby quilt size. You can purchase the pattern at their Esty shop by clicking on the logo below. On January 1st, I put on a Project Runway Marathon (Season 3) and I got going. I was able to pick my fabric, complete my blocks and assemble the quilt before episode 5 was complete. Such a pretty modern baby quilt! I adore this color layout, these fabric choices are so pretty and calming. Remix in reverse is a whole different quilt! I love how this maker reversed the colors and used the blues…

The No Sew Christmas Tree Skirt

By bethbastian | November 24, 2018 |

This is an easy peasy Christmas Tree Skirt, that does not need to be perfect to be super fabulous!    I used the most beautiful furry with gold flecks fabric I found at Joann’s, I literally gasped when I saw it.  Then I saw the price tag of $30 a yard, and I put it right back.  Well, Joanns sent me a 60% off coupon the next day, so I had to go back and get it.  I bought a yard and a half regular price $45, with coupon $18. Word to the wise about fabric selection.  As I said, I bought the furriest fabric they had and it was a hot mess to work with.  I literally had fur everywhere, but I love how it came out so I did not mind the mess, but it ranks up there with glitter.  However, if fur is not your jam then you…

How to Stop your thread from breaking while quilting

By kelbobastian | August 6, 2018 |

Top five ways to stop your thread from breaking while quilting. There are very few things more frustrating in quilting than your thread breaking while quilting.  Truly, you just got done basting your quilt, you are ready to sit down and make major progress and every few minutes your thread breaks.  This is enough to turn your quilt into a UFO, we have all put our projects in time out until they can behave. But what if I told you that it’s not your quilts fault, and there are 5 simple tricks you should try before putting your quilt in timeout.  If you do all five of these tips before you sit down to free motion quilt, your thread will not break (that much) and you will reduce the time and frustration on finishing your quilt. Is your machine clean? Before you put your free motion foot on, clean your…

Quilting Rulers Every New Quilter Must Own

By kelbobastian | August 6, 2018 |

The Four Quilting Rulers every new Quilter must own Rulers are one of those items that the longer you quilt, the more of them you will have.  I have a rule that when I go to a quilt show, I do not allow myself to buy any more rulers (that rule only works half of the time).  Right now I own 41 rulers, and several of them are still in its packaging. There are so many nitch rulers that allow you to make that one wonderful block or quilt, but there are only four rulers that every quilter has out at all times. Before we talk about the ruler sizes we need to talk about the basic difference in rulers and what you should think through.  You will keep your ruler for a long time, decades. About 10 years into my quilting life I had to replace a ruler because…

What Rotary Cutter Works Best For You bu Garland Girl Quilts

What Rotary Cutter is Best For You?

By kelbobastian | August 6, 2018 |

What you need to know about picking a Rotary Cutter! To start we are not going to talk about Olfa vs Fiskers, as that is like debating Coke Vs. Pepsi, you will find the brand that you like best.  Personally, I have several brands and really don’t see much of a difference in the tool itself each brand. What we will review is the kind of rotary cutter, and how you can find the one that works best for you. You do not want to join the Rotary Club Before we go any further, rotary cutters are NO JOKE, they cause injury and will hurt you if you do not pay attention while using them.  There is a term used in the quilting community called “Rotary Club” this means the quilter has cut themselves so badly that they needed medical attention.  Not to scare you, but the week I started…

5 Basic Tips Every Quilter Should Know

By kelbobastian | August 6, 2018 |

There is basic sewing machine knowledge that most people have learned the hard way.  Or should I say most people assume everyone knows these tips, but most people don’t talk about them.     When your thread breaks lift the foot before rethreading the needle.  When the foot is down, part of the sewing machine goes tight around the needed, this is done to keep your tension perfect.  If you leave the foot down when re-threading the needle it confuses the machine and will mess up the tension of the top thread. You should change your sewing machine needles after 8 hours of use.  Honestly, I don’t know one quilter who does this. But if your thread randomly starts to break, a dull needle would be the number one reason this is happening.  Chances are there is nothing wrong with your thread (as long as you are not using…

Beth

Hi there!

My name is Beth and I am the Garland Girl who runs this blog. I have been quilting for almost 15 years, and let’s face it quilting did not come easily to me. Do you remember that kid who had no rhythm, but danced her heart out at every recital? Well, that was me in the quilting world. I remember one night about a year in, I was working on a baby quilt ( the shower was the next day) and after every wash, at least one seam would pop open….good times. The crazy thing have I loved everything about quilting. I found joy in the process, even though the binding on the table mats I gave my mother in law fell off after two washes. A few years in, I realized that I needed to practice my quarter seam, and learn how to bind a quilt properly. I have worked so hard at my craft, man I have made so many mistakes and found so many ways to do things easier than I had to start writing them down.
